This transcription is based on the variations and ornamentations that T. Boehm wrote around 1870 on the first lied of the Winterreise cycle (1827). It is a melancholic lied that explores a traveler’s sense of rootlessness and loneliness. The protagonist does not allow himself to remain with his beloved to whom he says goodbye simply by writing Gute Nacht on her door. The constant movement of eighth notes in the accompaniment seems to represent the traveler’s restlessness and constant wandering.
