Gerson Batista

Gerson Batista (1988) is a Portuguese composer, illustrator, multi-instrumentalist and poet from Aveiro, Portugal. He started his academic path in Civil Engineering but early on he began composing. In 2007 he enrolled in the Calouste Gulbenkinan Music Conservatory of Aveiro, to study music theory, organ and vocal techniques. He also studied composition with Pedro Bento, Adelina Tavares, Ricardo Ribeiro and Virgílio Melo.
Since then, he has written and presented theater and poetry plays, an opera, published two books, various music albums, composed and produced across a broad range of musical genres and instruments.
Some of his awards are: 1st Prize at the Composition Competitioni for Orchestra of the Vale do Sousa Conservatory; 1st Prize at the Composition Competition for Accordion and Ensemble INATEL – Associação FOLEFEST 2018; 1st Prize at the Composition Competition for Choir Peças Frescas Açores – 5th Edition 2018; 1st Prize at the International Composition Competition for Choir Coro Universitario de Sant Yago de Valencia 2019; 1st Prize in the National Arts Competition Aveiro Jovem Criador 2019; 1st Prize in the Walter Hussey Composition Competition – Reading Phoenix Choir; 1st Prize at the Unternehmen Gegenwart Stimmgold Vokalensemble 2019; 1st Prize at the Singapore International Composition Competition 2020, and many other awards and commissions around the world.
