José Valente (Oporto, 1981): composer and violist. PhD in Contemporary Art with unanimous distinction by the University of Coimbra. Awards: Honorary Mention at the Lopes-Graça Composition Competition 2009; winner of the artistic projects competition Serralves em Festa 2010; New Talent Fnac 2014; the only portuguese to hold The Hannah S. and Samuel A. Cohn Memorial Foundation Endowed Fellowship, awarded after an artistic residency at the Djerassi Residency Artists Program in California, USA. José has worked with Paquito d’Rivera, Dave Douglas, Don Byron, Andrew Dreyblatt, Shakir Khan, Jason Kao-Hwang, among others. Relevant concerts: Soloist at Carnegie Hall, Dizzy’s Club at Lincoln Center, International Jazz Festival of Coimbra, Serralves Foundation, Paredes de Coura Festival, Imaxinasons Festival, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Maria Matos Theater, Union Square in New York (solo show). His first album “Os Pássaros estão estragados” (2015), 4 stars at Jazz.pt magazine) was considered record of the year by music critic Rui Eduardo Paes. He frequently participates in multidisciplinary projects with various artists from the Portuguese contemporary scene.
