João Fonseca e Costa

João Fonseca e Costa (1994), born in Ponta Delgada (Azores, Portugal), began his musical studies at the Conservatório Regional de Ponta Delgada in Violin and later in Viola.
He completed the Bachelor Degree in Composition at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (ESML) in 2015, under Luís Tinoco, Sérgio Azevedo, António Pinho Vargas, Carlos Caires, Carlos Marecos, Roberto Pérez, among others.
Of his repertoire already premiered, stands out the works “Saudade” (2016) for ensemble, “De Profundis” (2016) for choir and wind orchestra, “Enigma” (2014) for solo clarinet and “Açores, descoberta de um novo mundo” (2014) for symphony orchestra.
Parallel to his studies in Composition, he has been working as a singer in the ESML Chamber Choir and the Ricercare Choir. He participated in the 1st workshop of the Gulbenkian Choir in 2016, ending with a concert conducted by maestro Gustavo Dudamel.
João currently attends the 2nd year of the Master in Music studies at the ESML, under the guidance of Carlos Caires and is a FCT Research Fellow for CESEM – Centro de Estudos de Sociologia e Estética Musical/IPL-ESML.
